“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”—Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)
The note from my dear friend said, “I am in despair. They use me and kick me to the curb. I’m done.”
Her feelings are a result of tough experiences combined with not enough support or understanding. Perhaps many of us can relate to my friend. We feel alone. We want to be “done,” whatever that means.
In times like these, it is important for us to hear that there is One who will never leave us. The Lord goes before us, along side us, and behind us. God does not forsake us.
However, sometimes it is difficult to know and believe that God is with us. When we are in darkness, it is hard to see the light. In these times, we need someone to share that God truly is present . We need someone to embody God’s love. For most of us, we hear these words of assurance and comfort the best from a person with whom we have a connection. In fact, the beauty of being a part of a congregation is that we have relationships with people, both established and new, who can be those voices that say, “I hear you. You are not alone.”
Again and again, in worship, in fellowship, in quiet moments together, you can look to your Christian brothers and sisters for the embodiment of God’s presence. Again and again, you can be the one who offers that assurance to others. You can be the one who says, “God truly is with you, no matter what.”
Even outside of our church walls, you and I are “ambassadors for Christ.” We are to seek out and reach out to anyone who might want to say, “I’m done.” Christ calls us to make the connection and to create the relationship. He calls us to be for someone else the embodiment of God’s promise “I will not forsake you” and Christ’s commitment, “Lo, I am with you always until the close of the age.”
May God’s constant presence and strength be with you on your journey. Remember, you have a God who goes before you, a Christ who does not forsake you, and the Holy Spirit who guides you and keeps you.
